“It’s not about having high-paying jobs, big houses, fast cars.
There is nothing wrong with that, but the new American dream is bigger.
It’s about how to achieve your success while also making an impact in the world.
What you create for yourselves you must also create for others.”
– Jose Andres, founder, World Central Kitchen, chef
What I’m Contemplating
Coaching is about connection. The common thread in all of my coaching engagements is making authentic and meaningful connections with my clients so that they can integrate their core values into their overall engagement strategy and ultimately be more impactful. I am continuously in search of outlets for meaningful connection. I write about this in my blog post here.
What I’m Watching
How do you want to show up? When determining what to focus on in our philanthropy, we must first identify the values that make up who we are at our core and what motivates our decision making. The Science of Character takes a quick 8 minute, entertaining look at the neuroscience behind the development of values and traits such as gratitude, empathy, humility, creativity and leadership. Recent studies show that if you focus on certain parts of who you are, then you can strengthen your character muscles and ultimately live a more meaningful, successful and happy life.
What I’m Hearing
Courage is the first step in making meaningful connections. Abby Wambach restates the adage, “Courage is the presence of fear and doing it anyway”. Glennon Doyle counters, “Courage is not being afraid of yourself”. What does courage mean to you? For more about courage, listen to last week’s episode of On Being podcast with Krista Tippett with writer/philanthropist Glennon Doyle and soccer icon Abby Wambach.
